Taketomi-jima charms those who visit the island. Everyone admires
its beautiful scenery and the stunning variety of colors - roads
of white sand, houses with red tiles, fresh green trees, brightly
colored flowers, the shining sun, the deep blue sea, and a coral
reef brimming with vivid tropical fish.
Traditional culture includes various things - ancing, kyougen, music,
mythology, legends, songs, textiles, architecture and so on. The
culture has been cherished and passed on from generation to generation.
Taketomi-jima is imbued with a spirituality that harmonizes perfectly
with its surrounds.
In order to study the traditional culture and spirit of Taketomi-jima,
we established the National Association for the Preservation of
the Culture of Taketomi Island (NAPCOTI). We hope those who are
interested in Taketomi-jima will join NAPCOTI and assist us in creating
a new Taketomi-jima.
The goal of NAPCOTI is to preserve Taketomi-jima's unique cultural
treasures while at the same time creating and enjoying a new Taketomi-jima.
We are sure NAPCOTI will be an oasis for the mind.

Through the periodical "Hoshizuna no Shima"(The Island
of Star Sand), we hope to strengthen the bond between members and
enjoy aspects of traditional culture, such as mythology, legends,
songs, performing arts, and festivals.
Contributors to "Hoshizuna no Shima" are mainly scholars,
special advisers, specialists, those with an interest in culture,
and editors of NAPCOTI.
Traditional performing arts and a lecture about the culture of
Taketomi-jima, Yaeyama and Okinawa are held in Tokyo, Naha, Yaeyama
and so on.
Members of "the Association for the Preservation of Folkloric
Performing Art of Taketomi Island" sometimes perform on stage.
Scholars and those knowledgeable about the island's culture, who
are members of a special committee, give an interesting and easy
to understand, but at the same time thought-provoking lecture from
time to time.
