This small island is a mere 9.2 kilometers in circumference with
a population of only 300. One can still find remnants of good old
Okinawa in this island dotted with roofs of beautiful red tiles.
The site of these red tile roof dwellings has been designated as
"a district of important traditional structures".
The Tanedori Festival has been designated as "an important
intangible cultural asset of the indigenous people of the island".
This festival, the most important event on the island, has been
celebrated every autumn for about 600 years.
Culture
The artistry of Taketomi-jima, exemplified by such craftwork as
"Minsa weave" and "Basho cloth", is highly regarded
throughout the world. Those who are spiritually minded can feel
close to the gods at a holy place (Mitaki) or in the presence of
a Shinto priest (Kantsukasa).

Taketomi-jima was founded about 600 years ago when six chiefs came
to the island. Nishitou, who served the Ryukyu dynasty, and Kuyama,
who is immortalized in the folk song "Asatoya Yunta",
were born on the island. Various old tales remain in Taketomi-jima.
The National Association for the Preservation of the Culture of
Taketomi Island (NAPCOTI) was established to preserve the cultural
heritage and property of the island. Those who would like to know
more about Taketomi-jima and join us in the preservation of its
cultural treasures are warmly welcomed. This is how to join us.
